Cover My Class is not built on intuition about what schools need. Every feature traces to a body of educational research — and to one counter-question we put to ourselves: what does the evidence actually say should be in the cover adult's hands?
Teaching is not the delivery of content.
Shulman's 1986 distinction between subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge explains why a supply teacher with a maths degree and twenty years' experience can still deliver an unsuccessful Year 9 algebra lesson. PCK — knowledge of how this content lands with these pupils, which misconceptions arise, which analogies bridge them — is accumulated over time by the regular teacher. It does not transfer with the adult. [79, 80]
Pedagogical content knowledge … includes an understanding of what makes the learning of specific topics easy or difficult.

The cover lesson stops being "a maths lesson taught by someone who knows maths" and becomes a continuation of this teacher's sequence — the only kind that demonstrably preserves attainment.
The cover adult is a learner, too.
An adult arriving in an unfamiliar classroom is, cognitively, in a high-load state — layout, names, behaviour cues, lesson goal, fire procedure, safeguarding lead. Sweller's theory holds that working memory is limited to roughly 4–7 chunks; extraneous load crowds out the capacity needed to actually teach. [83, 84]

A cover adult who does not know the class's prior learning will mis-calibrate the difficulty of the lesson. The platform supplies the calibration.
Confidence is fragile in an unfamiliar room.
Bandura identified four sources of self-efficacy: past success, seeing others succeed, verbal persuasion, and physiological state. A covering adult lacks the first, receives no second or third at the door, and often arrives in an elevated fourth. [86, 87]
Each piece of structural information delivered before the lesson — seating plan, behaviour notes, SEND adjustments — substitutes, in part, for the missing enactive mastery.
The platform functions as a self-efficacy scaffold for the moment one is most needed — the adult walking into a room of pupils they do not know.
Cover quality is not a marginal issue.
Hattie's synthesis of more than 800 meta-analyses, corroborated by Coe et al. and Chetty et al., concludes that variation between teachers is the largest in-school determinant of pupil outcomes. [71, 72, 73, 74]
If regular-teacher quality maps onto a meaningful share of outcomes, then cover-teacher quality does too — for the lessons cover staff deliver.
Any intervention that narrows the gap between regular-teacher and cover-teacher effectiveness compounds across the school year — for every class, every subject, every term.
Every principle assumes you know the class.
Rosenshine's ten evidence-based principles — begin with a review of prior learning, present material in small steps, provide worked examples and scaffolds — are the de facto core of the Early Career Framework. Almost every one presupposes the teacher knows what the previous learning was. [85]
The platform transfers "previous learning, current step, scaffolds in use, the misconception to look for" — the four fields that make Rosenshine's first principle actionable in a cover context.
It converts the covering adult from an improviser — relying on generic classroom management — into a deliverer of a specific, structured lesson continuation.
Instability harms the whole school.
Ronfeldt, Loeb and Wyckoff found that teacher turnover harms achievement not only for pupils whose teacher leaves, but for pupils whose teacher stays — turnover disrupts the school as an organisation, with effects concentrated in schools serving disadvantaged pupils. [101]
Deployment analytics let leaders see and target the most-disrupted classes — not just the most-absent departments.
Improving cover quality is an organisational intervention, not just a per-class one. The school that makes cover systematic reduces volatility for everyone.
Five propositions. One prediction.
Each proposition predicts the same thing: systematically transferring class-specific information to a covering adult, before the lesson, should improve outcomes — particularly for disadvantaged pupils, particularly in subjects with high prior-knowledge demands. Cover My Class is the operational instantiation of that prediction.
How the evidence was assembled — and how conservatively.
The business case behind this platform is a structured evidence synthesis: 165 sources spanning UK statutory guidance, official statistics, peer-reviewed journals indexed in Web of Science, Scopus and ERIC, and reports from established research institutes. Where estimates are modelled, assumptions are stated explicitly and tested across low, base and high scenarios.
The author erred consistently towards conservative inputs — where an effect was reported as a range, the lower bound was used. The result is that every quantified claim on this site understates the likely benefit, and does so deliberately.
